Official course

Approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

This is not a study guide or a practice test. It is the approved course itself — the one that produces a Boating Safety Education ID Card at the end. It is built to the national education standard set by NASBLA.

  • Seal of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation CommissionFlorida FWCThe agency that approves the course and issues your card.
  • National Association of State Boating Law AdministratorsNASBLA standardThe national education standard the course is built against.

Agency marks identify the approving bodies. They do not imply endorsement of any other product or service.

The course

What is in the Florida boating course?

Florida law and the national standard, written for Florida water rather than adapted from another state. Ten chapters, each lesson short enough to finish between interruptions.

  • Two riders on a personal watercraft, both wearing life jackets

Ten chapters, about three to four hours

Every topic ends with questions that check you actually got it. Nothing is timed and nothing is locked behind a video you cannot skip back through.

    • 3–4 hours
    • 10 chapters
    • Any device
  • Before you leave the dock

Weather, float plans, fueling, launching and the checks that prevent most bad days before the engine starts.

  • Your boat and required equipment

The parts of a boat, capacity and registration, plus the safety gear Florida requires on board: life jackets, signals, extinguishers, lights.

  • Rules of the road

Lookout, safe speed, meeting, crossing and overtaking, sound signals, fog, and reading other boats' lights at night.

  • Navigation aids and the Intracoastal

Channel markers, regulatory signs, charts and tides, and the rules for paddlers in the Intracoastal Waterway.

  • Florida law on the water

Who must carry the card, the exemptions, boating under the influence, and your duties after an accident.

  • Manatee zones and protected waters

Idle speed and slow speed zones, emergency and construction vessels, manatees, sea turtles and seagrass.

  • When things go wrong

Cold water, someone overboard, capsizing, fire, running aground, anchoring, and calling for help.

  • Jet skis, towing and divers

Florida's personal watercraft rules, towing skiers and tubes legally, and boating safely near divers.

FAQs

Florida boating course questions

The questions people ask before they pay, grouped so you can find yours. If it is not here, write to us and we will answer it.

Who needs a card

Who needs a boating safety card in Florida?
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 who operates a boat with 10 horsepower or more needs a Florida Boating Safety Education ID Card, or another accepted proof. It has to be on board with you, along with a photo ID, whenever you are operating.
I am visiting Florida. Does this apply to me?
Yes. The requirement covers anyone operating a boat on Florida water, resident or not. A boater education card from another state, an International Certificate of Competency or a Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Card also counts. If you have none of these, you can take the course, or the temporary certificate exam for a short stay.
Is there a minimum age to take the course?
No, there is no minimum age to take the course. If the student is under 13 we ask a parent or guardian to give consent before we collect any personal details, which is a COPPA requirement rather than a boating one.
Is anyone exempt from the requirement?
Yes. Licensed captains, people operating only on a private lake or pond, anyone accompanied by a qualified adult who is responsible for the boat, new owners within 90 days of buying a boat, and a few others are exempt. People born before January 1, 1988, and anyone operating under 10 horsepower, are outside the rule altogether.

Taking the course

How long does the Florida boating course take?
About three to four hours in total, including the chapter quizzes and the final exam. You do not have to do it in one sitting — progress saves after every question, so you can stop whenever you like and pick up exactly where you left off, on any device.
Can I take the course on my phone?
Yes. The whole course, including the final exam and your certificate, works on a phone. It is built mobile-first, so there is nothing that only works on a desktop.
What happens if my connection drops mid-course?
Nothing is lost. Your last answer is saved before the page moves on, and when you come back you resume at the same point. This is designed for marina wifi specifically.
What if I do not pass the exam?
You can retake it at no extra cost. Nothing is lost — your course progress stays exactly where it is, and there is no additional fee to sit the exam again.

Your card

Is this course accepted by the state of Florida?
Yes. It is a state-approved course, and we report your completion directly to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. You do not have to send in a form or apply separately for your card.
When does my physical card arrive?
Your certificate is downloadable the moment you pass, and with a photo ID it covers you while the state makes your card. The permanent card is issued and mailed by the state, usually within two to three weeks.
Will my Florida card work in other states?
Usually, yes. The course is built to the NASBLA standard, and most states recognize boater education that meets it. Check the specific state before you travel, as the rules on who must carry a card differ.

Price and refunds

How much does the Florida boating course cost?
$50, paid once, for the lifetime course. That covers the course, the final exam, any retakes and the state card fee. There is no subscription and nothing added at the end.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you have not started the course, write to us within 30 days and we will refund you in full, no questions asked.
Are there any extra fees?
No. The price you see covers everything, including the state card fee that some providers charge separately at the end. There is no charge to retake the exam and no renewal fee later.
